TOP TEN HEART HEALERS
Provided by Prevention New plant compounds in these healthy, cholesterol-lowering foods slash your risk of heart disease by 20 percent. What to buy and how to eat them.Make room in your pantry for a new batch of disease-fighting products: foods fortified with sterols and stanols, plant compounds proven to protect your heart. Sterols and stanols are found naturally in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and oils. Adding 2 g of either to your daily diet can help lower your total cholesterol by about 10%--often within 2 weeks, according to numerous studies published in both American and European medical journals. That may not sound like a substantial reduction, but it could translate to a 20% lower risk of heart disease--which is the number one killer in the United States, says Joseph Keenan, MD, a professor of family medicine and a joint professor of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota. Our primer will help you better understand how these unique compounds work, how they can protect your health, and the easiest way to incorporate them into your diet. Why They're Making NewsFor more than 5 decades, scientists have known about the health benefits of these compounds, but natural foods don't provide a high enough concentration to budge your cholesterol. (A tablespoon of corn oil, the best natural source, has only 0.13 g of sterols; that's a long way to go to reach the recommended 2 g a day.) But in the 1980s, Finnish chemists found a way to extract the sterols and stanols from plants and add them to the fat in foods. These new compounds, called sterol and stanol esters, first cropped up in margarine-type spreads in 2000. Today, new technology allows researchers to extract them from different plants and fortify more foods--such as cheese, orange juice, breads, and milk. Popular sterol brands you'll find in foods include Cardio-Aid (made by food manufacturer Archer Daniels Midland) and Coro-Wise (made by Cargill). By next year, global market researchers predict sterol-fortified products will be a $250 million industry, nearly three times what it was when such products first hit supermarket shelves. How Do They Work?Plant sterols and stanols act very much like cholesterol itself: Soft and waxy, they serve as building blocks for hormones, vitamins, and cell walls. These structural similarities give them their cholesterol-lowering capabilities. As sterols travel through the digestive tract, they compete with cholesterol, so some of the sterols are absorbed into the bloodstream instead of artery-clogging cholesterol. The bonus: Studies show that sterols that sterols and stanols don't affect artery-protecting HDL cholesterol. Who Needs Them?Sterols are most helpful when your cholesterol levels are slightly high (200 to 239 total cholesterol, 130 to 159 LDL). If your levels are substantially elevated (240 or higher total, 160 or higher LDL), your doctor will help determine if sterols, cholesterol-lowering medication (statins), or a combination of the two is best. Studies have shown that together, sterols and statins are more effective than taking a double dose of cholesterol-lowering medications, according to a report by researchers at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. They're an especially good choice for avoiding drug side effects. "If one of my patients has a high LDL level but doesn't tolerate statin drugs well, I recommend plant sterols and plenty of fiber," says Arthur Agatston, MD, a preventive cardiologist and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. If your cholesterol is healthy (less than 200 total, less than 100 LDL), adding sterols to your diet won't hurt, but the cholesterol reductions will not be as great, says Cyril Kendall, PhD, a research scientist at the University of Toronto who has studied plant sterols for the past 7 years. Who should avoid them?Scientists don't know if sterol- and stanol-fortified foods are safe for pregnant women and children, so it's best if these groups skip them altogether. Also important to note: Initial research indicates that sterols can interfere with the absorption of some carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, which your body uses to make vitamin A. If you eat sterols, include a few servings of vegetables rich in beta-carotene--such as carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens--to your diet once or twice a week to compensate, suggests Keenan. LIVE TO LOVE ALL

Why Are You Smiling?
By: Joseph J. Mazzella
"Why are you smiling?", my daughter asked me the other day. It was too complicated to answer her right away. I had been lost in thought. I had been thinking about my life and all the blessings that I had been given by God. I was thinking about the first time that I held my daughter in my arms. I was thinking about just recently giving her a driving lesson. I was thinking about all those joyous and priceless moments in between. I was thinking of my two sons who in spite of their handicaps and learning difficulties had taught me more about love, kindness, and bliss than I could ever have hoped to learn on my own. I was thinking about my family and friends and about all the joyful support they had given me over the years. They had helped me to grow into the person I am now.
I was thinking too about how wonderful it had been to grow up in these mountains of my home. Their natural beauty had touched my soul daily. I was thinking as well about how delightful it had been to have so many dogs and cats all through my life. Their love so freely given was a constant source of joy for me. I was thinking most of all, however, about how much God must love all of us to bless us with so many opportunities to choose love and share joy in this life. I was thinking about all of these things so naturally my face and soul were smiling.
Life is so wonderful. Life is so beautiful. Life is such a glorious gift from God. It is full to overflowing with people to love, wonders to enjoy, and good things to do. Even its most painful moments and most difficult times can lead us to greater growth, learning, love, and oneness with God if we let them. Be thankful for all the blessings God gives you in this life. Think of them often. Let them fill your heart, mind, and soul. And then when people ask you why you are smiling all the time, you will know what to say.

Chantix – A Smoking Cessation Treatment Drug
By: Hayden Eck

To know about smoking cessation and the latest aid for it, read on.What is Smoking Cessation?Smoking cessation is a nightmare for all smokers but a dire need to. Smokers need to go for smoking cessation if they want to improve their health. Many smokers try endlessly to quit smoking but are unable to do it. This is because of nicotine in cigarettes. Nicotine addiction is the culprit behind the habit of smoking. Many aids are available for smoking cessation such as nicotine patches, nicotine gums and lozenges, and nicotine inhalers. All these are nicotine replacement therapies and aid in smoking cessation by providing nicotine to smokers and slowly weaning them from their habit. Recently, another drug called Zyban, which is a non-nicotine drug also got approval in the US, however, this drug causes seizures and hence is not used vastly.About ChantixChantix is the latest aid for smoking cessation and works by attaching to nicotine receptors in the brain. The active ingredient in Chantix binds more strongly to the receptors than nicotine and hence even if a smoker smokes during the treatment, he gets no pleasure from smoking. Moreover, by attaching to the nicotine receptors, Chantix helps by relieving withdrawal symptoms and cravings that arise due to lack of nicotine.Who can take Chantix?Every adult smoker can take Chantix but only if his or her doctor prescribes it. Chantix is a prescription only drug and is not safe for everyone. Some people who cannot take Chantix are as follows:• People below the age of 18 and above the age o 65• Pregnant and lactating mothers• People allergic to ingredients of Chantix• People taking medicines for asthma, diabetes and other medications such as vitamins, herbal medicines, and blood thinnersIngredients of ChantixThe active ingredient in Chantix is varenicline. This is the ingredient that acts like nicotine and attaches to nicotinic receptors in the brain. Varenicline is non-addictive in nature.Other ingredients of Chantix are as follows:Microcrystalline cellulose (NF), anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate (USP), croscarmellose sodium (NF), colloidal silicon dioxide (NF), magnesium stearate (NF), Opadry ® White (for 0.5 mg), Opadry ® Blue (for 1 mg), andOpadry® Clear (for both 0.5 mg and 1 mg)Benefits of ChantixThere are many benefits of Chantix and people prefer it because of its benefits. Some of them are as follows:• Chantix does not contain nicotine• Smoker can quit smoking easily with Chantix, as it reduces nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms• Chantix has success rate of 44%, which is higher than almost all smoking cessation therapies and medicationsSide effects of ChantixThis is a very important piece of information and you should be aware of it before you take Chantix. Some of the common side effects of Chantix are as follows:• Nausea• Sleeping problems• Vivid dreams• Constipation• Gas• VomitingAvailability of ChantixChantix is available in many countries but it is known as Chantix only in the US. It is known as Champix in other countries. This is because the FDA found the name Champix too overstated and asked Pfizer to change the name. Both these drugs contain same ingredients and work in same manner, the only difference lies in their name. You can get Chantix in all leading pharmacies and get it online also. Many people prefer to avail Chantix online, as it helps save them their time, money, and energy. Why take Chantix for the treatment of smoking cessation? The answer to this question lies in benefits of Chantix. First, Chantix does not contain nicotine; this gives it an edge over nicotine replacement therapies. Second, the success rate of Chantix is 44%, which is considerably more than these therapies. Third, Champix is twice more effective than Zyban and does not cause serious side effects in most users. All these benefits of Chantix make it a preferred drug for all those who wish to go for smoking cessation.People, who really wish to give up smoking, should take Chantix for smoking cessation as it increases their chances of success manifolds.Brief descriptionFind out about the latest smoking cessation drug that increases your chances of success and reduces the problems associated with smoking cessation.

Do you love spoiling him, respond to his every whimper and cry, and spend hundreds of dollars on gourmet treats? To say that dogs are man's best friend is anything but a cliché. How to Housebreak Your Dog or Puppy

My Fathers Daughter
My dad was an avid animal lover. We grew up with all kinds of animals but especially dogs. That is one of the main things I got from my dad. He taught me a lot about the care and consideration it takes in owning an animal and the responsibility involved in doing it right. He never looked at them as simply pets but an extension of family that needed to be treated as such. So needless to say I had tons of animals.

Westies for Sale - Avoiding the Perils of Purebred Puppy Purchases
In the purebred West Highland Terrier puppy market, there are few rules or laws governing who may breed dogs, and then advertise Westies for sale. Both ancestry and the breeding environment will affect the quality of the Westies offered for sale, and some breeders are a lot less careful about these details than others. Never buy the first Westie you find, from the first breeder you come across advertising Westies for sale. Take the time to learn about both the breed and the breeder to avoid an expensive mistake, and the heart-breaking loss of a dog due to health problems.

Tank Requirements For Discus Fish
For Discus fish, there are 2 consideration in tanks - tank depth and volume. Because of their size and swimming habits, a minimum of 18" is needed for tank depth, the deeper the better. Regarding volume, a good rule of thumb is that each adult discus will need 10 gallons of water. Larger tanks will also give more stable water conditions, and taking into account other considerations the minimum size for a discus show tank should be no less than 55 gallons. It is also advisable to use a rectangular tank. Not only are they cheaper, but are more efficient, because they maximize surface area. Surface area is the most important factor in buying a tank. Why? Because it is only at the surface of the tank that gas exchange occurs. (Oxygen in, Carbon dioxide out.) Assuming you have a seventy five gallon show tank, and it's biological filter is working as required, up to twenty young fish 3 inches in size, or 6 or 8 fully adult discus can comfortably inhabit the tank. An outside filter may be added to large tanks to increase basic aeration and biological filtration needs.

creative art

Can anyone be an artist? People admiring my work often say, "I could never do that!" I say, "Yes, you can!" Eight years ago, during a very difficult time in my career in finance (Downsizings, layoffs ? let's not talk about it, OK?), my company sent me to a development workshop for female executives. I came out of a particularly thought-provoking discussion group and penned the following very prophetic free verse. Threads They Said Mimi said, "Why don't you paint again?" I said, "There's no time. I crunch numbers now." Carole said, "You can do it!" I said, "No. I don't think so." Cheryl said, "You have an artist within. Reach down. Bring it out." I said, "My numbers ? they pay the bills. Though, God knows, they don't feed the soul anymore!" Martha said, "There's a strength within you." I asked, "They why do I feel so weak, so beaten?" Bob said, "Reach for the sky. Be your mother's daughter. Write poetry. Perhaps the answer lies within." I reached. I created. I wrote. I discovered. The threads came together. I design tee-shirts now. On a glorious sunny beach. I write my musings in between. And share them with other artists --- like me. I didn't really dwell on these thoughts at the time since I ended up taking early retirement and had no intention of going back to work. "Threads They Said" got filed away with my other work files. I only unearthed it recently and was stunned to realize how it all has come true. Except we don't live on a glorious sunny beach, we live on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful lake ? close enough for me! And now you are some of the other artists I share my musings with! I believe anyone with a creative eye can be an artist. If you know what you like when you see it, you can be an artist. If you know what someone else will like, you can be a commercial artist. You only need to find your medium or craft. To find the artistic spirit within you: 1. Think about your abilities, not your dis-abilities; what you can do, not what you can't. Maybe you're good with the computer. Think graphic arts. Maybe you wield a mean needle. Think of practical sewn items to which you can add artistic touches. Today with the endless supply of craft materials and kits to get you started, there's something for everyone ? or I should say ? something for every artist. 2. Determine your bliss. I once read that if a woman thinks back to what she most enjoyed when she was between 8 and 11, she can identify her bliss. For men, it's between 10 and 14. They mature later, you know ? some women would say never. If, at that age, you were always making "stuff" (doesn't matter what) and loved having your own crayons (that no one else was allowed ? under penalty of death ? to touch) and maybe your own set of colored pencils, art and crafting could be your bliss. If you took particular joy in actually producing something ? an end product ? rather than just messing with all those neat (or should I say, messy) paints, you almost certainly have an artist within. 3. Browse a local crafts superstore or Internet crafting sites (please start by browsing around TheArtfulCrafter.com!). Go up and down the aisles, whether virtual or real, and see what appeals to you. Purchase a few kits. [Aside: If you intend to sell what you make from the get-go, be sure to consider what will also appeal to your future customers.] 4. Don't be afraid to try something new. To me, a sub-definition of artist is "someone who is always trying something new" ? new techniques, new media. You have ittle to lose ? the cost of a kit or a few tubes of paint ? and very much to gain! You have permission to publish this article electronically or in print, free of charge, as long as you include the author's bio and any links, then send an email to Eileen@theartfulcrafter.com with a courtesy copy of your publication or link to your web page by Eileen Bergen The Artful Crafter www.theartfulcrafter.com

If your child is being bullied - 20 top tips for parents - Parenting

If your child is being bullied - 20 top tips for parents - Parenting: "If your child is being bullied - 20 top tips for parents

Keith is now in the fourth grade and he dislikes school. For a fourth
grader, this does not sound right. The reason Keith dislikes school though
does not have anything to do with academics. Keith is being bullied before
school, at school, and on the school bus. Who can blame him for not wanting
to go into that environment?

The basic definition of bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying
things to have power over another person. Bullying involves crossing into
one's space without permission.

Isn't bullying just something that happens to all children and we're just
making a fuss over this? The children will get over it, right? Shouldn't we
tell Keith to grow up and handle it? Wrong. Bullying happens to far too many children and adults shouldn't be ignoring it.

WHAT CAN A PARENT DO?

If Keith is being bullied and he is not reporting it to his parents then
there are some very important questions to address.
· Why wouldn't he tell his parents?
· What message have Keith's parents sent to him about bullies?
· Does Keith's parents have a history of dismissing what he says?
· Possibly Keith's parents have had a habit of getting too involved in
solving his problems.

Tips for parents:
· Encourage your child to report any bullying incidents to you.
· Validate your child's feelings. It is normal for your child to feel
hurt, sad, and angry.
· Ask your child how he/she has tried to stop the bullying. Asking
questions is a wonderful way to have your child do the thinking."

Nail Biting Basics

Nail biting in all its various forms is problematic behavior beset by peculiarity and contradiction. Technically speaking, the correct word for nail biting is ANONYCHOPHAGIA.

Nail biting typically begins between the ages of five and 10 and is common among children as well as adults. As many as one in three Americans bite their nails.

One of the more noteworthy and generally surprising things about nail biting is its high instance. It crosses every social and economic barrier. Prevalence figures for children are much higher than for adults.

Results of nail biting can result in short, ragged nails. It may also lead to damaged cuticles as well as bleeding around the edges of the nails. Infections can also develop if nails are not properly attended to.

Most relevant studies have found that nail biting tends to peak out around puberty.

A study by Malon and Massmer studied the behavior in the Chicago school systems and reported that nail biting is prevalent in about 60 percent of children age eight to eleven.

Most people agree it is a learned habit, perhaps picked up by watching a parent or someone else biting their nails.

Nail biting is an extremely tough habit to break and treatment for it varies.

One possible solution is identifying the reason for nail biting. Avoidance or modification of these situations can be beneficial to the eventual elimination of the habit.

Improving self-esteem is also helpful when attempting to break the habit.

Products such as CONTROL-IT are available on the market and are designed to aid nail biters in breaking their habit. According to www.stopbitingnails.com , CONTROL-IT is a gentle and natural alternative to help prevent biting. A mild unpleasant taste helps to remind users to stop biting their nails.

A host of research efforts both in America and Europe sought to ascertain if in fact nail biting was linked to mental illness in one form or another. Most people would have anticipated they found a high prevalence of nail biting among the mentally disordered; however, they found that nail biting, in and of itself, is not systematic of any form of mental disorder or maladjustment.

Nail biting crosses all national borders, genders, and both social and economic lines and may also originate from a primal need for self-grooming. It affects both the nails and the cuticles; with greater potential harm caused via infection to the cuticle and nail biting tends to be a private affair, and is a relatively isolated form of self-indulgence.

Nail biting may be treated addressing symptom rather than cause; it is a habit, not a disease.
